BRANDING TIPS #4: Becoming a Superhero for Your Target Customers

BRANDING TIPS #4: Becoming a Superhero for Your Target Customers

Have you ever thought about doing a  little bit more for your target customers than what your competitors are doing right now? In fact, knowing this will make a difference why some companies make it and why some companies break it. Here’s why:

  • In business and branding, becoming a superhero brand has little to do with wearing a cape. It has more to do with crafting a bespoke luxurious experience for your customers.

  • So, whenever your customers interact with your business -- whether online or offline, they should feel good. And that is the basis of any good customer experience strategy.

  • That calls for a good customer service and PR strategy campaign, which is one of the most secure investments you can ever make during the branding phase of your business.

Chinese Celebrities Spark Nationalist Firestorm Against Foreign Brands

Chinese Celebrities Spark Nationalist Firestorm Against Foreign Brands

Last Thursday, a  large number of Chinese celebrities expressed support on for a nationalistic backlash against foreign-owned consumer goods brands.

At least 40 Chinese stars canceled high-profile, lucrative sponsorship contracts, after expressing concern over the human rights situation in China’s Xinjiang Province.

Among them were Zhou Dongyu and Jackson Yee, the stars of the best foreign picture Oscar nominee “Better Days,” “Mulan” star Liu Yifei, and the actor Song Dandan, the stepmother of “Nomadland” director, the Chinese-born Academy Award frontrunner Chloe Zhao.

“Mulan” star Liu Yifei was part of a big Chinese New Year promo campaign for Adidas just last month. She has now cut ties with the brand for its concern about Xinjiang labor practices.

The firestorm broke out after the US, the E.U., Britain and Canada announced a coordinated sanction against Chinese officials over their policies in Xinjiang. Beijing retaliated by imposing even harsher sanctions on the E.U. in return.

Apparently, they were “deeply concerned” by reports of forced labor and discrimination against ethnoreligious minorities in Xinjiang.

The controversy plunged China’s entertainment industry into the firestorm over alleged human rights abuses in Xinjiang. Beijing denies it, but U.S. officials and leading figures in other democracies described the activities in Xinjiang as a “genocide.”

The conflict highlights the real and escalating challenges artists must face when straddling the divide between China’s enormous market and the humanitarian expectations of the media and the public.

Google Doodle celebrates Malaysian doctor who invented the surgical mask

On March 10, 2021,  Google Doodle celebrated a Malaysian doctor who invented the surgical mask.

In the homepage Doodle, Google celebrated what would be the 142nd birthday of

Dr. Wu Lien-teh, inventor of an early version of the multi-layered surgical mask we have

all come to rely on.

Born on March 10, 1879 to a Chinese-Malaysian family in Penang, Malaya, Wu was the first

Chinese student to receive a medical degree from Cambridge University.

In 1908, he was appointed vice director for China's Imperial Army Medical College, overseeing medical training for military personnel.

Wu was also tasked with investigating the 1911 Manchurian plague, an epidemic that killed 60,000 people. Wu discovered quickly that the disease was spread through respiratory transmission.

To combat the disease, he constructed an extra-protective surgical mask with layers of cotton and gauze, and advised members of the public as well as medical professionals to adopt the protective mask.

According to a Google blog post about the Doodle launch, Wu also "worked with government officials to establish quarantine stations and hospitals, restrict travel, and apply progressive sterilization techniques."

As a result Wu was able to contain the disease's spread in just four months.

At present, Google worked with Wu's family, including and Ling Woo Liu, to document their great-grandfather's legacy.

Speaking to Google about her family history, Wu’s great-granddaughters Dr. Shan Woo Liu said: "Growing up, we heard our father’s stories about our great-grandfather — that he was famous for controlling the Manchurian pneumonic plague, a disease that was deadly for nearly everyone who contracted it,"

"His story stirred something in me, and from an early age, I dreamed of becoming a doctor... Today, as an emergency physician treating COVID-19 patients, I appreciate his bravery all the more."

What’s your next Iconic Move?

The popularity of their spicy chicken dishes such as: Ayam Penyet Grand, Ayam Belado Keren, Ayam Sambal Ijo, Ayam Bakar Jomblo, and Ayam Bakar Hunny continues to grow with the availability of  online order delivery.

UMIDO BAKERY: Interview with founder Nur Zalikha Mohd Rasidi

CONGRATULATIONS to Nur Zalikha Mohd Rasidi, the founder of Ika Baker International Sdn Bhd (Umido Bakery) for winning The BrandLaureate SMEs e-Branding Awards 2020 in the category of Lifestyle - Online Baking Class & Bakery.

A native of Gerik, Perak, Nur Zalikha’s passion for cooking started early, when she helped her mother to make cakes and biscuits during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, and dreamed of opening her own bakery one day.

At the age of 20, Ika got married and migrated to Selangor with her husband Encik Aswai and they started a business together with a capital of RM100 to sell donuts, rice, and cakes, to improve their financial situation.

With talent in cooking, Ika studied awhile in her field of interest before venturing to start her own pastry and bakery business from home, at the age of 27.

After years of hard work and perseverance, it finally paid off.

In 2019, inspired by her mentor Dr. Azizan Osman, Ika decided to open her own bakery studio followed by a mini bakery, which became a runaway success, and created a lot of job opportunities for women to become Umido agents to generate a side income.

Their delicious hand-made signature cakes are made locally by young people to support their families.

Today, Umido has received hundreds of orders each week from wholesalers and agents to sell and distribute their cakes.

Ika's patience and perseverance  finally paid off as Umido recently recorded sales of over RM3 million, and have more than 100,000 members.

Umido Bakery also provides a variety of online cooking classes complete with videos, recipes, and secret techniques to produce delicious, easy, and fast dishes.
